It comes from the old saying of wisdom, "All rhodes lead to the island," which is how Christopher Columbus first got the idea to sail to America. The first place he landed was what we now call Rhode Island but at the time it had some stupid indian name. Christopher took one look around and was so moved by its beauty that he declared loudly, "IN THE NAME OF GOD AND THE QUEEN I NAME THIS LAND 'CHRISTOPHER COLUMBIA'! FATHER, INTO THY HANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT." And he gave up the ghost. His body fell to the Earth and vanished into the soil. And that's why we call it Rhode Island.
I'm pretty sure that some Italian guy saw the similarity between some Greek Island of Rhodes. Then some Dutch dude came and was like... hey it's soil looks red, so he named it Roodt Eylandt, so it just kind of mixed together until it was officially called Rhode Island. Yet again another weird question Haamid. I hope you choke on a childs liver.
